Tetris Wouldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

As any major prize-giving event nears, you'll find an outcry for introducing of new categories to recognize overlooked contributions and delight the spirits of followers with niche passions.

A fellow writer previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. The same goes for tabletop games, which is someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward because like all dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification supporting my request remains most pressing and important of all. This is the request: There should be a category for puzzle games.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and inevitably generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason movie academies avoid this approach. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise in the world of video games, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

The major gaming awards offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these award types effectively encompass many game types, allowing placement for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, all very different: structural challenges in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens outstanding logic titles released every year that have no home during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition for anything in 2014
  • Another creative title missed out in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked in 2021
  • Only a few brain-teasers scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often compact experiences, yet the craft in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Well-known matching games count as most popular titles globally maintaining this status for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience challenges famous sandbox experiences claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and engaging across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. One could readily select five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these are games without proper classification at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators operate at the hard edge game development, producing among essential manifestations of the video game form. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay generations.
