RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, pinpointed through surveillance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in mountainous terrain just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a series of entry passages providing entry to the facility... early reports are that the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the operation late on Saturday and each participating jet returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - also known as the so-called Islamic State - imposed militant control over parts of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation shows the UK's leading role, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eradicate any resurgence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.

British military aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of IS after its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank every member of British forces involved in this strike for their skill and their courage," he added. "They were among thousands of UK service members stationed over the holidays. This operation, to remove terrorist threats who threaten our safety, shows how our armed forces are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure domestically and strong abroad."

During December, the US military conducted what it called a "massive strike" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, after an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates Islamic State still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Iraq and Syria.
